Teaching/Mentoring

Laurence is an experienced teacher of drums and percussion, notching up nearly a quarter of a century working in various education institutions and privately, providing; one-to-one lessons, group/band workshops and also working as ensemble director/conductor.

Many teachers favour a teaching approach typically has at it’s core a graded scheme of learning, whether ABRSM, Trinity College London or similar. These formally recognised structured syllabuses offer an orderly progression of education that can be a very effective path for some and I cater for this option, but, in recognition that taking exams isn’t motivational for everybody, at the heart of the service provided is expanding knowledge, enabling and encouraging self-development, the setting and achievement of realistic goals, and fundamentally fanning the flames of enthusiasm for each individual pupil/student.
So, whether rock and pop, electronic, orchestral, or whatever genre I may not even be aware of existing (yet… do tell!!), a curiosity to help and guide is my personal challenge with the intention to be a teacher that inspires through a shared learning experience, something that can and regularly does expand and enrich my own awareness of the whole musical world as a whole.
There is an introductory rate for the first/trial lesson, after which standard ISM teaching rates are observed and which follow inflation in line with annual increases.

Mentoring others on their performing arts journey is a relatively new aspect of my professional work, but it recognises that, through my own artistic practice, I have gained valuable knowledge in aspects of the industry that can be shared and benefit others with their professional development.
Drawing on my own formal education, a BMus in Orchestral Percussion and MMus in Composition with Technology, and my professional career as a performer/sound-artist/etc. encompassing tours/installations throughout the UK, Europe and internationally, the broad skill-set I possess expands into adjoining areas such as music tech – relating to recording and live sound, instrument maintenance and repair, or even building your own unique musical instrument from scratch. Sometimes just bouncing ideas off another creative mind can really help draw focus with problems being faced, certainly I have been lent the ears of mentors and peers and will continue to do so on in to the future.
As this is more likely to be a one-off or short run of meetings, possibly in person but also online via video call, then a standard hourly rate will be set and exact contact time negotiated depending on what is required.

So, if you are interested in drum lessons, or perhaps a spot of orchestral tambourine, maybe exploring pzm microphone recording techniques, integrating contact microphones, construction of hydrophones, circuit bending or hacking… get in touch via the contacts page, ask me a question, start the dialogue… I look forward to hearing from you.
